AI relies on energy-intensive computations with a significant carbon footprint. A report by the World Economic Forum on AI and Energy noted that generative AI systems already use around 33 times more energy to complete a task than task-specific software does, and the computational power needed to sustain AI’s growth doubles roughly every 100 days. In addition, simply training a single NLP model requires over 600,000 pounds of C02 (nearly 5 times the average emissions of a car over its lifetime), and the water consumption needed for cooling (AI’s data-centres generate considerable heat) is more than ‘considerable’.
