River Monsters: Mega Piranha

Mega Piranha

From time to time we get some interesting requests land on our desks, but the day we received the email entitled “Giant prehistoric piranha” is certainly one of the most memorable. When Icon Films contacted us to help us bring a giant, prehistoric piranha to life for Animal Planet’s River Monsters show we almost fell off our chairs with excitement. We love to use cutting edge rapid prototyping technology as part of our new product development process but we had never been asked to do anything like this before.

“Mega Piranha is thought to have been around 3 feet long, more 5x larger than its ferocious modern day ancestor, the Red Belly Piranha.”

The formidable giant Piranha known as Mega Piranha is thought to have inhabited the Rio Panerá, Brazil millions of years ago. Mega Piranha is believed to have been at least 3 feet long, more 5x larger than its ferocious modern day ancestor, the Red Belly Piranha.

Since no complete fossil of this creature has been discovered and only partial remains have been found, Icon Films needed to recreate a full scale model to show its incredible size. By 3D scanning a modern day piranha skeleton we were able to scale up the model and create a highly detailed, full size SLA model which was used in an episode of River Monsters entitled “Prehistoric Terrors”, dedicated to finding the most ferocious prehistoric predators.
